1.1: Date Auction

Well hey there guys, gals, and non-binary pals (as well as creatures and beings that have no adherence to the human concept of gender)! Would you look at that? It sure is time for Dodo’s Doki Doki Date Auction!!

Ballroom Bliss

On this fine evening, step through a doorway, any doorway at all, and find yourself whisked off to a lovely ballroom. What’s that? You’ve never seen this room in Dodo House before? Don’t worry about it! The clouds painted upon the ceiling move gently overhead, and the blue skies will shift beautifully through the phases of the sky, all the way from dusk to dawn and back again. While you’ve been whisked away in the clothes you were wearing prior, maybe you didn’t intend to come to the event at all! If that’s the case, and you’re not dressed, there appears to be a lovely magical coat check at the entrance. You may peruse through the offerings of seemingly limitless clothes to change, or you may get abducted by an especially eager coat rack, now sentient in its reach and pushiness.

Aside from the ceiling mural, many white decorations grace the space. Though as the night goes on, there will be a few bubbles that seem to manifest out of nowhere–little pockets of excess energy carrying all of Dodo’s hopes and dreams, perhaps? Growing into contact with one might invite any number of behaviors, including but not limited to:

» Everyone’s a Critic: During the Date Auction blurbs, maybe you just have a really strong opinion on them! Have something to say about someone’s fashion sense? Do you remember making out with that guy on stage and feel like everyone needs to know he’s only a 3/10? The people deserve to know!

» With Whose Money? You’re into bidding now. Like, really into bidding. Maybe you don’t have the money for the bid and actually want to bid something else, like the promise of a long romantic cruise despite the fact that the ports are closed or a candlelit dinner complete with a watching of The Goofy Movie. How could you not win with bets like those?

» At First Sight: A little brush against the bubble and–pop! The next person you see suddenly makes the lights dim, the music swell, the part of your heart that yearns to be known leap out of your ribcage and into their waiting hands. It’s your K-Drama moment. Seize it.

All Bubble Effects can last as long as players would like! However all effects will clear once they exit the ballroom.

Under the Spotlight

Of course, can’t forget the reason that you’re all here in the first place! One by one, characters will be called up to the center stage at the front of the room. Behind them, a Powerpoint Presentation in Comic Sans explaining who they are will pitch them as a date. (You know the ones.) This information can include their Name, AU Life Facts, OU Life Facts, Likes, Dislikes, Ideal Date - whatever you dream of. However, the announcer will also provide crowdsourced blurbs introducing them. Without further ado, please read them all here! At the end of blurb reading, the microphone will be passed over to the auctionee. Anything you'd like to say on your behalf?

The Morning After

Regardless of the outcome of the date auctions, characters may find themselves with a dainty corsage of white flowers... which won't come off. But getting rid of these floral bands is simple: find the person with a matching corsage, and go on a date together!

"Date" is an exaggeration, though. Spending some time together, whether it's immediately after the auction or in the days after, will count. Then the corsage will slip right off! Ignore it though, and it'll set off allergies you didn't even know you had.

OOCly, these are your randomized dates, but players are welcome to go on additional dates and plan their own outings based on the date auction as well!

Is - that something you've had to do as well? [ Izuku's eyesbrows raise in honest curiosity, though of course he's not going to press if Roland doesn't want to expand on that. ]

[It's easy enough to avoid going into detail. Izuku's inexperience is a very normal thing, after all.]

I've little experience with it myself. However, just as we must learn to crawl before we can walk, no man is born with the words already in his mouth.

Well, that's true...I always feel like I'm, ah, not sure how people get to seeming so natural for it! I think some people just don't mind attention as much?

[ Not that it's a bad thing! He admires that. ]

[He nods. Indeed, some are more used to having eyes on them than others. And it isn't always pleasant . . . ]

Are you unaccustomed to such attention?

W-well...it's more like - actually, kind of? I mean, I was sort of ignored for some of my childhood, and I guess I got used to that? [ There was the occasional bout of negative attention, too, so maybe that contributed...? Izuku has actually never really thought about it that deeply and now that he's trying to figure out an answer, he can't give a proper one. ]

I think I just get sort of in my head about things and overthink my answers and then freeze up?

[His lips part halfway through Izuku's explanation before pressing together. The circumstances of Izuku's childhood are unknown to him, but Roland's heart buzzes in ache over those words. No one should grow used to such a thing.

Even so, he smiles lightly.]

You've nothing of which to be ashamed. There's little merit in speaking thoughtlessly; your hesitation is proof that each answer will be meaningful.

That's a really nice way to put it...You're a kind person.

[ Or...a thoughtful one. Or both, rather, Izuku thinks. He likes to think that he says meaningful things, but he knows some of it is just unfiltered brain to mouth word dumping. ]

I'm merely speaking my thoughts.

[With restrictions. Unlike Izuku, he's grown accustomed to curating his words over the years. Of them, kind isn't one he'd use to describe himself.]

In any case, the time for interviewing has passed. Have you been enjoying yourself otherwise?

Well...actually, yeah! Normally formal stuff makes me pretty nervous, but despite how odd this is, everyone seems to be having a good time, don't you think? I mean, there's a lot of bickering and yelling, but overall everyone seems to be joking around...I think the atmosphere is pretty fun!

[ In his point of view everyone seems to be getting along pretty well! Even the people who are arguing. ]

I think so as well.

[He hopes Fukawa is faring well among the clothes in the back, though, and that Felix has simmered down since his stint on stage.]

Dodo has done a wonderful job of preparing the venue again.

[If nothing else, it's pleasing to the eye.]

It has! I wonder if it just likes parties...? [ It feels weird to talk about a house like that, but...it's not like this house doesn't have a personality, right? So Roland will get what he means. ]

It does seem especially excitable during gatherings. I wonder if there were many guests before us . . .

[Is it possible for an entity like Dodo to feel loneliness, too?]

Oh, do you think? I mean...I guess I haven't seen signs one way or the other. Maybe it just...goes through cycles of being occupied?

[ He has no clue. He's just randomly spitballing. ]

If only there were someone or something we could consult . . .

[He lifts his head, straightening his shoulders.]

But I forget myself. Though it's imperative that we understand our place in this world, wellness is also important. Pray, don't let me stop you from enjoying yourself.

Oh! Um, same here. Though I'm not having a bad time talking to you?

[ He just likes to chat, and honestly wondering about where they are is fun to him, in a way. ]

[That's kind. Roland's eyes soften.]

People often approach me to share their concerns. If aught ever troubles you, I would be happy to listen.

Oh, um, same here! I mean, I'm happy to listen if you ever need it as well. It can't be all one way, right?

[ He'd feel bad if that were the case. ]

[The people in this world are truly something else. As much as he appreciates the offer, however . . . ]

Consider it a vocational practice. As a monk, it gladdens me to relieve others' anxieties.

A monk...is that of a specific order?

[ Izuku is a curious cat though if Roland doesn't want to reply of course he doesn't have to. ]

[Curious, indeed. Seeing as it's public knowledge, he sees no need to hide this.]

I belong to the people's church. Rather than a god, we follow our doctrine to provide for those in need.

Wow! That's super admirable...how did that even get started? Is it really old, or newer?

[ Izuku, this isn't an interview show. ]

[But it can be.]

It's rather new. I joined the order in its early days some years ago.

Oh! So you know the founder even?

[ He...ASSUMES? ]

[Ah. He nods.]

We're not a terribly large organization. I would say that I know most of the members in it.
