They both look so ridiculous, and he's aware of it, even if he does not mind at all looking like a peacock. What a wonderful thing to resemble. (He's so weird.)]
Alive. It sounds like being a live. [He smiles. It's a surprisingly genuine one, but he is talking about the natural world.] They have all kinds of different voices. Some beautiful, some soft, some heavy, some loud.
no subject
Beautiful, soft, heavy, loud—not one that's ugly or likewise, but simply alive. Roland can't help staring. D's expression always softens when it comes to natural life. Is that how unconditional love should look from the outside?]
They must be endless. I should like to hear at least one someday.
no subject
The love he has for plants and animals is immense and pure. He would die for any of them, he thinks, even if fate would not let him.
And maybe one day, he shall die for them. Much to Roland’s horror.]
I should hope you can, Mr. Roland. I think you would enjoy what they have to say.
[He reaches out to take a few more of the flyers in a stack.]
Perhaps you can even find yourself a goose mate.
no subject
First Sorcha, and now this . . . ]
Teasing me again?
[As if even a goose would touch him with a ten-foot pole—]
But I think so, as well.
I knew someone with a close companion in her hawk. When she was attacked by a bandit, he flew fearlessly toward the point of my nocked arrow and cried for my help. I learned that day just how wise and true animals could be.
[If he could have heard Flugie's voice then, what would Flugie's words have been . . . ? Something heartfelt about Hughette, surely.]
no subject
The story makes him smile again as he had about the animal's voice. An understanding, kind and gentle thing.]
Hawks are incredibly intelligent and beautiful birds of prey. They can be very loyal too when trained with a caring hand. She was blessed.
no subject
She was.
[And how he envied their relationship. To fly together and face the world head-on at each other's side—two loyal souls, hearts intertwined . . . ]
Do you have a companion of your own?
no subject
Thankfully, he does not know Roland's very real admiration and envy of such a romantic trope. He fixes the papers a bit in his gloved hands, mismatched eyes lifting.]
I run a pet shop, so I have many companions. [THIS ISN'T WHAT ROLAND MEANT.] T-chan and Pon-chan are usually close by, however. There used to be Q-chan... but, ah, he went... on another journey, you could say. He had some work to do.
no subject
Regardless of what Roland meant, he pictures a bird on a migratory flight at the news of this Q-chan. Actually, given the way D is, he imagines all of them to be something along those lines.]
Are they animals, as well?
no subject
Yes. T-chan is a totetsu. Pon-chan is a badger. And Q-chan... was a bat.
[He smiles at Roland rather enigmatically; this doesn't match the fact he's stuck in the neck of a peacock! His mood is not this icon, but those are T-chan and Pon-chan...]
no subject
Is there a reason for that pause? Roland isn't sure how D feels about Q-chan. But a bat, huh . . . ]
Totetsu?
no subject
Mm-hm. A distant relative of the sheep and the goat. He's a carnivore. It's difficult for him to separate his affection and his desire to eat. They are one and the same.
no subject
Roland, meanwhile, looks surprised.]
You mean to say that he eats the object of his affection?
no subject
Yes, exactly that.
no subject
Then what of his mate?
no subject
His mate will die if his affection is strong enough. He had a crush on a sweet sheep girl once, but he bit her because he cannot separate his affection and his hunger.
She got offended naturally and dumped him.
no subject
[That poor sheep. His heart breaks for T-chan, too.]
I trust she's all right, then. But what of T-chan?
no subject
He laughs gently. For some reason, it's such a dismissive laugh!! Like this isn't a big deal at all!!]
She was alright. T-chan was extremely disheartened, but those are just his instincts. He can't help them. He got over it quickly as he began fighting with the detective after. He'll find a suitable mate one day, someone who will share his passion.
no subject
[He shudders inwardly at the thought. It's well and good that T-chan is so resilient, but the prospect of a perfect match seems to mean that the future will be short-lived.]
no subject
[He really
talks about T-chan and this whole carnivore thing like it's something totally normal.]
Have you never felt that way before, Mr. Roland? About someone you care for. Not eating, of course, but... loving them with your entire being so much so it's difficult to separate who they are and who you are.
no subject
Perhaps that same ignorance feeds his confusion at the abstract love of which D speaks. He turns the question over in his mind, eyes flitting down in thought. A large part of him fails to grasp the concept while a small part of him stirs at the notion. Flashes of memory and the indignation they carry give him pause, and he lifts his refocused gaze after a protracted moment.]
. . . If I have, I do not recall it.
no subject
It makes sense Roland wouldn’t remember everything based on what Roland has already told him. He nods his head in acknowledgment with a slight smile.]
Well, I hope you come to remember something like it if that happens to be true.
